Edible Plant Project

Edible Plant Project

Originally posted by Jennifer W. West

Last weekend, the Florida Chapter took part in the Edible Plant Project at Siembra Farms. The Edible Plant Project is a nonprofit mission run by volunteers that strive to promote edible landscape and local food production. The Edible Plant Project’s goal is to create alternatives to the unsustainable food system in this country. When we arrived at the farm, we were separated into 2 different groups. One group picked sweet potatoes, while the other group tended to the green house. In the green house, we picked out the weeds, cleaned seeds, and planted sugarcane. All in all, the Florida Chapter was able to devote our time in a fun and farm friendly way!

This event was absolutely free of charge for the new member candidates. Custom paddles through the local woodworking shops typically range anywhere from twenty to seventy dollars, quite an expense.

This year the Florida Chapter has asked the position of Publicity Coordinator to be as active as possible. As a response we have had many shirts created for events, such as the ones our members wore to Sea World just over a week ago (which you can see our members showing off at the penguin exhibit). The shirts pictured from this semester include our "semester" shirt (which is a shirt not for a specific event), the Sea World shirt and a shirt for our upcoming "Woodser" bonfire....

Last week, we at the Florida Chapter woke up bright and early to visit SeaWorld in Orlando. We were granted early-hours access to the park, and given a behind-the-scenes tour of their dolphin training facility, manatee and sea turtle rehabilitation centers, and veterinary lab. We were even lucky enough to see a one month old manatee being examined for overall health after being treated for a buoyancy problem which prevented him from submerging...

Ag Day on the Ag Quad

Every semester the Cornell Chapter hosts "Ag Day" on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Quad. Our event this semester was held on September 20th. While Cornell may be the land grant university in our state, sadly many students do not even know that Cornell still has agricultural departments. We hold this event to both educate the Cornell Community, as well as to raise money for Tompkins County 4-H...

Making Strides for Breast Cancer 5k

Making Strides for Breast Cancer 5k

Originally posted by Grace E. Poling

This was a fun run/walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise funds for Breast Cancer research. The chapter participated by helping with walker/runner registration over the course of several hours on a Sunday morning. The chapter volunteered because we felt that this cause was more than worthy of our time and efforts. Those that participated walked away knowing that they had contributed, even in a small way, to finding a cure for cancer. Prior to the event, our chapter designated those that would participate as well as drivers for transportation to and from the event.
