PEMBROKE - Mr. S.E. (Shelly) Shuman, 79, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 8,
2010, at his home after a brief illness under the care of Hospice Savannah and
was surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann S.
Shuman, his mother Myrtie S. Wilbanks, his father Henry Speir Sr., his sister
Velva L. Celeste, and two brothers Henry Speir Jr. and Melvin Speir.
He was born in Clyde and moved to Pembroke
at the age of 6. He graduated from Bryan
County High
School in 1947. He received a Bachelor of Science
degree in forestry from the University
of Georgia in 1957. He
was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Zeta, and the Honor Fraternity Xi Sigma
Pi. He proudly served his country in the Navy (Seabees) during the Korean War
while being stationed in Guam from 1952-54. He
served as a member of the Bryan County Board of Education from 1979-86.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pembroke. He was an avid
sportsman and thoroughly enjoyed raising deer hounds and collecting every
species of fresh water ducks. He was retired from the construction industry,
where he had been employed by Sam Findley for 11 years, APAC 2 years and then
was founder and owner of Shuman Construction Company, Inc. for 30 years. He
received the honor of Savannah Boss of the Year 1966-67.
