On October 25th, Cook Chapter participated in the
annual Rutgers’ Monster Mash. Monster Mash is an event held by Rutgers
University that serves as an alternative trick-or-treating activity for the
children of New Brunswick. The goal of this program is to provide a safe venue
where kids can come dressed up and participate in games and get candy. Clubs
and organizations at Rutgers are encouraged to come up with a game or some
other type of presentation that the kids can interact with. Our table had two
different purposes. First, we came up with a corn-hole type of game and the
kids had to throw a ball into a basket. If the ball stayed in the basket they
got a candy prize. They actually still got the prize even if they missed,
because how can you say no to a little kid dressed up in cute costumes? The
second part of our table was dedicated as a coloring station. We laid out
spooky coloring book pages and had the kids color as many as they wanted.
This event benefits the local children who may not live in
the best of areas because it provides them with a safe alternative to trick or
treating in the neighborhood. Our chapter benefited because we were able to
have a great time interacting with the kids and it was fulfilling because we
were able to provide a safe and fun experience for them. We participated
because we think it is a great event and it is becoming quite the tradition in
our chapter to do so. We asked members to help out with the game and they
signed up to work the table in shifts. We divided the night into hourly
timeslots, but most members ended up staying the whole time!
