Members gathered at active Sara Orlowski’s farm in Perth, NY on the weekend of July 27-29. The weekend was filled with tours of local farms and businesses. Sara’s farm, SO-MO-JO Feather Farm raises Murray Grey beef cows and many different kinds of poultry for show. The first tour of the weekend was at Patchwork Meadow Alpacas, where they gave members a tour of their large alpaca farm. The owners spent a lot of time talking about their animals which they take great pride in. Actives were able to go into the barns with the animals and pet them and ask questions. A tour of Palatine Valley Dairy was given, where members learned about the entire cheese making process from start to finish. The milk comes from local dairies and is sold in the area. The cheese was delicious! The last tour of the weekend was of Hollaway’s grain farm, a large commercial farm that grows soybeans, corn and raises dairy cows. Members really enjoyed learning about and seeing the large machinery used. The tours were very diverse and all members were definitely able to learn something new. Summer weekend served as a great way to reconnect with our brothers and sisters over the long summer and learn more about agriculture.
