Dr. W. Harold Reese (Texas Beta), emeritus professor of biological and earth sciences, is slated to receive the Distinguished Lifetime Service Award from Wayland Baptist University during chapel services Friday as part of homecoming weekend.

Reese came to Wayland in 1966 after completing the doctor of philosophy degree at Oregon State University. He attended Wayland Baptist College from 1944-45 and 1946-47 before completing bachelor and master's degrees at Texas Tech in 1952 and 1961, respectively.

He won numerous research grants and was involved in investigating meteoric showers in Hale County as well as weather trends on the Llano Estacado. In addition to his many teaching, counseling and committee assignments, the former division chairman was instrumental in developing mineral and other scientific collections and in obtaining gem cutting equipment for science laboratories. For his contributions, the Wayland community recognized Reese with the Distinguished Alumni Faculty Award and Outstanding Teacher Award. He retired as professor of biological and earth sciences in 1994 after 28 years of service to Wayland.

The School of Mathematics and Sciences at Wayland will host a reception honoring Reese and other honorees with new endowed scholarships in the school at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Moody Science Building.
