On October 20th, 2018, brothers of the North Carolina Chapter traveled to Person County, NC to take a tour of the Hill of Berries Farm. Brother Bryce Berryhill and Brother Eugene “Cal” Berryhill are both alumni of the North Carolina Chapter of Alpha Zeta and allowed us to come to their farm to see the inner workings of a tobacco harvest and much more. The Hill of Berries farm is about 3,000 acres, with the two major crops being burley tobacco (one of our States #1 crops) and firewood. A large part of the tobacco grown on this farm is used in popular cigarettes in the United States. The firewood harvested on the farm is used for kindling for gas stations and the local area. The hurricanes that have come through North Carolina have caused quite a bit of damage, which is the case with many of the farms in the area. This tour was a great opportunity to see how farms deal with such significant damage, and to talk with alumni of our chapter!
