On Friday, October 18th, 2013 the Alpha Zeta - Cal Epsilon Chapter volunteered their time to serve the community of Fresno at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo's annual Zoo Boo Event.  The event primarily focuses on a safe and family fun environment in which children can dress up and "trick-or-treat" around the zoo after normal operating hours.  Cal Epsilon had a superb group of volunteers in which they lead sections of the harvest carnival games and a candy station in front of the giraffes exhibit.  Members in attendance had a grand time passing out Halloween candy and proctoring carnival games...

Volunteering at Lubee Bat Conservancy

Volunteering at Lubee Bat Conservancy

Originally posted by Jennifer W. West

This past weekend, the Florida Chapter went to the Lubee Bat Conservancy Festival. The conservancy only allows the public in on this one day out of the whole year. The goal of the festival is to educate the public on how beneficial bats are to the Florida environment and ecosystems.  Additionally, the festival helps raise awareness and money for the conservancy. As a chapter, we learned a lot about bats and were happy to help the conservancy by assisting with parking, and educating the public about the conservancy.

On September 11, several members of the Cook AZ chapter visited the Snyder Farm in Pittstown, NJ, which is part of the Rutgers research extension. The Snyder Farm serves as the Rutgers center for sustainable agriculture. While here, we learned about the many different crops they grow and some of the research they are doing to help educate and provide resources for NJ farmers on the topics of changing markets, politics, economics, and environmental impact.

On September 10, the Cook Chapter held a Halloween Card making event. During this event the brothers and new members made Halloween cards for the children that are currently at St. Peter’s Children Hospital. This gave the brothers the chance to meet potential new members and get involved in a great service opportunity to give back to the New Brunswick community.

Last weekend, we volunteered at the Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary. It was really cool to see the different types of monkeys—they all have such distinct personalities! We worked hard to create a fun and safe new home for them in one of the cages. We all had a great time getting to know each other better, too! It was inspiring to see how much the workers loved and cared for the monkeys, and I can't wait to go back and help some more!

On April 15th, Sigma Alpha hosted their eleventh annual Swing-a-Thon fundraiser.  Fifteen brothers signed up to swing for fifteen minutes on the Brickyard. Each brother paid $10 to swing on the porch swing and received a t-shirt. Alpha Zeta helped to sponsor the event by donating over $100, so our name is printed on the shirts. The revenue from Swing-a-Thon goes towards Agriculture in the Classroom programs.
