New Member Project!

New Member Project: A tradition that has continued for many years in the Cook Chapter was quite a success this semester. The new members and their bigs, in addition to any other brothers who chose to participate, came out to the beloved Rutgers Gardens and helped put mulch down around the daffodil beds that will be blooming soon. Also, considering the damage of Hurricane Sandy, Helyar Woods, a staple of the Gardens, were significantly damaged. Many trees had fallen down and the timber could now be used to make mulch.

The contest includes research paper presentations, quiz bowl trivia and livestock judging categories. Volunteering included leading student groups to different livestock pens for judging as well as preparing and cleaning up the barn after the students and animals had gone, It was a very agriculturally educational day and brothers of the Cook Chapter were able to meet brothers from the Morrill Chapter participating in the event!

Involvement Fair

Originally posted by Aubrey B. Weibel

Every semester, Rutgers host a school wide Involvement Fair and Cook Chapter always attends. This semester the event was on January 30th from 11-4pm. Brothers talked to interested people, explaining the ideals of Alpha Zeta and sharing some of the events that we've done. We always like to attend these events because we meet people who don't know about our recruitment events on a different campus and it helps us extend our reach. This semester was particularly successful as we got a total of 25 new members!

New Member Education Week is held every semester after candidates for membership are chosen. This week started on February 10th and lasted until Friday February 15th.  The purpose of Candidate Education Week is to teach perspective brothers the importance of teamwork to accomplish a common goal. The candidates are presented with a series of challenges in which they must learn about agriculture, find out information about the fraternity’s history as well as current activities, get to know current brothers, introduce themselves to alumni, and come together as a team. Candidates find out how close brothers are, and brothers have an opportunity to get to know candidates...

The members of the Florida Chapter have gotten very close this week while preparing for the annual Valentine's Day rose sale! Members spent Tuesday and Wednesday preparing the roses for the sale. Today, they delivered bouquets all over campus and sold roses at the student union. The proceeds from the sale today will go towards the UF Alpha Zeta Relay for Life team, benefiting the American Cancer Society. We are excited to Chomp Cancer! this March, and are continuing to fund-raise as a team!...

AZ Workouts

Come one! Come all!!! The Cook AZ brothers always support each other, and supporting each other in career goals and fitness goals is no exception. Our current chancellor, Becca Melvin, is an exercise science major who works at the Cook Recreation Center and taught one of her first RU Fit classes on Friday, February 1, 2013. This class is full of insanity based high intensity interval training 45 min work out consisting of jogging, burpees, squats, planks, and cardio work outs. Brothers came out to support her and participate in her class, which was quite a success. Getting into the spirit of things, they even made amazing gym attire. A chapter that works out together, stays strong together, and the pictures speak louder than words.

Tailgate

On Saturday, October 27th, Cook Chapter gathered on Busch Campus to celebrate Rutgers Homecoming. Before the game, the chair of Alumni Committee obtained a permit to park on Busch and organized a tailgate for brothers, pledges and alumni alike. After the tailgate was over, everyone went to the High Point Stadium to watch the Rutgers Scarlet Knights compete against Kent State. Unfortunately, this was Rutgers' first loss of the season, but everyone was in high spirits regardless.

They gave out candy to the children of New Brunswick and played a game with them, so that the children could have a safe place to participate in trick or treating.  Activities included a haunted house trail; a sensory station, candy give out station, a photo booth and a mummy wrap game station. Cook Chapter’s booth offered face painting and a bean bag toss game for the children.

The Big Chill is an annual charity 5k race run by Rutgers Programming. Each participant was required to donate a $10 toy for homeless children. About 8,000 people participated and close to 9,500 toys were donated. With the extra donations, Rutgers was able to purchase 350 winter coats for the children as well. Most of our brothers and alumni ran the race, but there were some who walked the three miles, or volunteered (starting at 6am) to help run the race. The event was a huge success.

Anti-Hazing Week

Anti-Hazing Week

Originally posted by Aubrey B. Weibel

During Anti-Hazing week at Rutgers University brothers and new members attended various workshops to learn about what hazing is and how to prevent the spread of it at Rutgers University. New members were also encouraged to attend a workshop sponsored by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs where they were taught the value of brotherhood and the negative effects and consequences of hazing. It was an information week for us all and we gained several ideas about fun bonding events that we could carry out in our own new member semester, one of which included a bake-off, an idea the brotherhood really enjoyed.
