The Science Agriculture Centenary

On the 23rd of September, the building Jose T. PIñero was converted into a farmer’s market with free tasting samples of local coffee, corn and mango ice cream. Around the building, we had the different machinery, photographs and equipment used through time. In this activity, students, ex alumni, farmers professors as well as the people of the community celebrated the passing 100 years of the agricultural faculty. In this exciting activity, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) gave the campus their trademark as a gift of appreciation for all the years of collaborative service. We as Alpha Zeta members helped in the organization before, during and after the celebration. Some of the members and students from different organizations had the honor of planting the tree symbolic of the one hundred years of the faculty.

Event: “Alzamora somos todos”

A rough translation of the event’s title is "We are all Alzamora”, Alzamora being the name of the estate that the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus is in charge off. The estate is used for the college researches that are related to agriculture, may it be soils, animals, plants, etc. The event was held Saturday, November 5, and it basically consisted of giving maintenances services to the estate. The university is benefited from this event because the budget giving to the estate is not very high and by giving the services that were done on the event the estate is better preserved and is still being kept used for student and professor researches. The chapter is also benefited from this event because the estate is used for various activities, including special laboratories that are part of the student’s main curriculum...

Our chapter benefited by coming together in order to make the lives of others better during the time of year where hope is in the area. AG Day at Penn State

AG Day at Penn State

Originally posted by Shawn W. Beam

On April 20th 2011, the Penn State college of Agricultural Sciences hosted Ag day on campus. This year's theme was Ag literacy. Our chapter along with other Ag clubs and Fraternities set up booths that related to this theme. Our booth was a comparison between Organic and Conventional farming. It displayed facts and myths about both farming practices and had edible samples of each. We then asked our visitors if they could "taste the difference”. The catch was we hid the answer of what each sample was. We received a variety of comments about our booth (and food samples) ranging from, "I didn't know organic farming used pesticides” to "I can taste the MSG in this apple”. All and all it was a successful day and a great way for Alpha Zeta to help educate those who don't know as much as they should about food supply...
