Cal Epsilon Chapter at CSU-Fresno

Author: Alpha Zeta/Tuesday, November 29, 2011/Categories: Chapter Spotlight

After becoming re-chartered in 2005, the Cal Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Zeta got a fresh start and began to focus on their members needs. Six years later, the chapter has more than 50 active and alumni members.

Throughout the recent years, Cal Epsilon has tuned in to what their members really seek from their involvement with Alpha Zeta. Brad Miranda, Cal Epsilon's Chancellor, says their high member involvement is due to getting members input on everything. "The more suggestions you have to help make an event better, the better they will become and it helps the members to feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves," Mr. Miranda said.

The Cal Epsilon Chapter is part of something; they are actively involved with their community. Not only do they encourage members to share opinions but listens to everyone in the community. "You also want to maintain a strong relationship with community members and alumni because they can only help you grow and provide opportunities to your members."

Because Cal Epsilon is located in the largest agriculturally-producing county in the nation, they love getting involved with the ag community. Every year the chapter host "Ag in the Classroom," where they visit elementary schools and give an agriculture-related lesson.

They also reach out to the ag industry in the community and invite them to the "Agricultural GALA Dinner," which is hosted in the spring at the Alumni House on campus. During the event, they have a silent auction, a key note speaker and many opportunities for members to network.

Another successful event the chapter coordinates is the Alpha Zeta Development Summit. For the past five years, the chapter opens the event to its members and other organizations on campus and enlists a variety of speakers to discuss career development, interviewing, resumes and networking. The event lasts all day and includes a special etiquette luncheon.

Not only do these events benefit the community, but they also help define chapter members. Mr. Miranda said they try to have every event they participate in help members gain personal growth and leadership.

In 2012, the Cal Epsilon Chapter will host the National Agricultural Leadership Conference (NALC) and will be given the chance to show other chapters of Alpha Zeta their community. Mr. Miranda and his chapter are extremely excited for the opportunity. "It’s an honor and opportunity to host NALC. The conference allows chapters to show where they are from and we are ready to welcome everyone into our home and give them a chance to grow as agriculturalists and leaders for the world of tomorrow."

In October, members had the opportunity to take part in a California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom event, titled San Francisco Farm Day.

"Team Alpha Zeta" competed in the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology’s annual Olympics. This year marked the centennial celebration for the college of Ag.
